Young people's positive behaviour awarded
Sixty young people have been awarded for their dedication to changing their lives for the better.
A celebration event for all the young people who have engaged with Trafford's Youth Offending Services Prevention Team over the past year, took place at the end of September at Sale Waterside with over 140 young people, parents and grandparents turning out to support the event.
The prevention team works alongside agencies such as the police, youth services, social services, housing trusts, voluntary and community groups to identify young people who could potentially be at risk of getting involved with crime or causing anti-social behaviour on the streets of Trafford.
All the young people received a medal and certificate for their work and trophies were given to celebrate special achievements in areas such as excellent team contributions, outstanding positive change and community project work.
As well as this, parents who engaged with the parenting program were also awarded for their dedication to the programme. The parenting programme is an important part of tackling youth crime as parents are vital in shaping behaviours. The programme involves working with families in their own homes to establish house rules and consequences to unwanted behaviour.
Just some of the work the young people have been involved in is making sandwiches for the homeless and raising money for charity through events such as sponsored walks.
Executive Councillor Christine Turner, who awarded some of the prizes on the night, said: “The event was a perfect opportunity for me, and the parents of these young people, to see all the positive work they’re involved in and to reward them for it.
“This work is vital in making sure that those young people who are at risk of offending, are involved in positive work in their community rather than causing nuisance.
“The programme, as well as conducting physical tasks, encourages discussions and tackles behavioural issues with the young people through working on issues based topics such as crime and consequences, anger control, equality and diversity, healthy eating and staying safe. I congratulate all of the young people and encourage them to continue their positive work.”
Inspector Laura Burgess of the Sale Neighbourhood Policing Team, who also presented on the night, said: “The Youth Offending Services Protection Team carries out some excellent work trying to steer young people away from crime and anti social behaviour and towards a more positive way of life. I am really pleased that this work has been recognised.”
The night also involved the showing of a short film created by the young people and a slide show of the young people at work over the summer.
