Training in Trafford helps young people 'Beat the Crunch'

With an ever tougher job market and more people chasing fewer jobs, young people leaving school or unemployed face an uphill struggle to secure work.

In Trafford, there is however plenty of good news for young people, their parents and carers according to Connexions.  This includes:

*  More training opportunities than ever for local 16-18 year olds
*  Something for everyone, from outdoor activities to work placements and basic   skills to job search activities
*  All 2009 school leavers and unemployed 17 year olds are guaranteed a training or learning offer
*  Many training opportunities include a full Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) payment of £30 a week - regardless of family income - and parents or carers are usually able to claim child benefit at the same time
*  These opportunities often lead to full time jobs, apprenticeships or further learning - it's easier to get a job with more skills and qualifications on your CV

Any young person currently not 'fixed up' who thinks extra training or support could benefit them, can meet training providers at a special 'Beat the Crunch' event on Tuesday, 23 June at The Talkshop, Sale Waterside (behind the town hall) between noon and 4pm.

One 17-year-old who's glad she sought help is Sinead Deery.  Sinead had to leave college early when she moved to Sale from Gorton.  She was also balancing work with caring for her mum who was suffering from cancer.

A friend told her about Sale's Skills Solutions training programme, so she went along to see how it could help her.  Within two weeks she'd secured work experience at Wilkinsons and taking further relevant qualifications.  She's since been offered a permanent sales assistant position and is managing to balance her work and caring responsibilities.

"I joined the Foundations Skills Programme (E2E) hoping to gain work experience and improve my literacy and numeracy skills.  At the start of the programme I was shy, but gradually got to know the staff and other people that attended.  I notified the staff I would like to get on a work placement and I started in March at Wilkinsons.

"The experience has been extremely positive for me and I would encourage other young people to come along to this event, or contact the Connexions Service, to see what help they could get," she said.
