Youngsters get 'on their bikes' for road safety sessions

Pupils got on their bikes to learn about road safety as part of Trafford Council’s annual Safer Cycling Scheme.

With 69 out of the 72 primary schools across the borough signed up and more than 2300 Year 6 pupils wanting to take part, the council’s road safety team had a busy time.

Four intrepid cycle instructors set out on a 24-week programme to train groups of children a safer way to cycle on our roads. With one playground session and two on road sessions, children were trained on how to make left and right turns, raise their awareness of traffic and respect other road users.

On completion of the course, each cyclist received an assessment of their cycling, a certificate of completion signed by the Mayor of Trafford and a small gift of a reflective keyring in recognition of their hard work and good behaviour.

Executive councillor Matt Colledge said: “It is very important to be able to offer training in this life skill to all the Year 6 pupils in Trafford. This will help them to become much safer cyclists in the future which will in turn contribute to the safety of all Trafford residents. ”
