Veterans honoured at armed forces celebration


More than 30 veterans from across the borough will be honoured at Trafford Council’s armed forces day celebrations on 1 July.


A call to arms, to which the council had an overwhelming response, was issued in May for people to register to be presented with their veterans badges. More than 100 people applied for badges, some of which will be delivered by post to the veterans.


The celebrations will be officiated by Rev Rex Buckley Veteran of the Cheshire Regiment, His Worshipful the Mayor of Trafford will present the veterans with their badges. Representatives from the council, sea cadets, air cadets, Army and the British Legion will also be there to honour the servicemen and women. , a performance from Springfield Primary School Choir and a short film ‘Could you recognise a Veteran?'.


83 year old Irene Booth served in the army's Auxillary Territorial Service from 1944-1947 she said: "It's very important there's an event like this and it's great to be able to commemorate veterans in this way. It makes you feel as though you are a member of the community. I am looking forward to seeing if there's anyone I served with and meeting other ex-service personnel who live in the same area."


Executive councillor Mike Cornes added: "This is Trafford Council's first official Veterans day celebration and I am delighted with the response we have had. It looks set to be a great event and is so important in recognising our local veterans who have served their country over the years."
