Trafford events mark National Carers Week

The theme of this year's national carers week (8-14 June) is 'Carers ..... the UKs secret service.'  To mark the week and celebrate the huge contribution carers selflessly make, there are three key events being held in Trafford.

Executive Councillor Michael Young said carers work often goes unseen and unrecognised, even though nationally carers save the country millions of pounds a year.

"People who care for a relative or friend want to do their best for them.  This can very often mean putting their own lives on hold or missing out on things themselves because of their commitment to that person.

"Here in Trafford our carers and young carers centres provide fantastic facilities, with support, advice, guidance and opportunities for carers themselves to relax and have some 'chill out' time.  While this is good, we know this is just the tip of the iceberg.  There are many thousands of carers across the country who nobody knows about.

"It is important we do everything we can to make sure they know there is help and support available and encourage them to take advantage of it," he said.

On Tuesday, 9 June Altrincham's Cresta Court Hotel is the venue for a one day conference focusing on development of services supporting carers and those affected by stroke, Alzheimer's and dementia.  It's jointly funded and delivered in partnership by Trafford PCT and the council.  Carers will be able to comment on service development proposals.

Wednesday, 10 June sees a carers celebration, hosted by The Trafford Carers Centre at the Salvation Army HQ in Sale.  Again open to all carers, it promises lots of fun and useful information in relaxed surroundings.

A legal event hosted by Trafford Law Society members will be looking at wills, trusts and legacies on Friday 12 June, at Grove House, Seymour Grove.  As well as free advice for carers there will be other activities available on the day.

For more information or to book a place on any of these events carers should contact Trafford Carers Centre on 0161 861 0101.
