Local school children have designed posters to show what can happen as a result of taking stimulants.

To mark National Tackling Drugs Week 2009 (8-12 June), the young people were approached to design a poster around the subject of 'Stimulants, Choices and Consequences'.

Alarming statistics show that more and more children have already tried stimulants which include alcohol, cocaine and speed by the time they leave secondary school.

The poster aims to encourage young people to consider the effects that stimulants can have on them, what choices they have in life and what could happen to them if they take them.

First prize went to year six pupil Amelia from Elmridge Primary School. Her poster will now be displayed in licensed premises and in public places throughout the borough to service a deterrent to those who are tempted by stimulants.

Executive Councillor John Reilly said: "This is a very serious issue. For those young people who think that it's acceptable to take drugs we want to send a stark reminder about the consequences and this poster will do that.

"Taking any kind of illegal drug is dangerous however the increasing number of people who are mixing stimulants such as cocaine with alcohol are risking their lives.  It's a lethal cocktail.

"In Trafford we don't stand out in terms of having a larger problem with drugs compared to other areas however we can't deny that this is happening.

"Congratulations to Amelia on an excellent design - her poster will serve the campaign well and will hopefully send a stark message to those who indulge in illegal drug taking to seek help to challenge their behaviour."

Chief Superintendent Janette McCormick of Greater Manchester Police’s Trafford Division said: "When we speak to members of the public, we find that drugs are one of their biggest concerns as they can destroy communities, fund other crimes, waste lives and even break up families.

"Through this week of action and our ongoing work with other members of the Safer Trafford Partnership to tackle drug crime we are responding directly to those concerns.

"However, I would like to remind the public that they can play their part in tackling drug crime by reporting any information to us either directly, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 55 111.

"The message to those involved in drugs or drug-related crime is clear, you will be caught and you will be brought to justice."

The poster has been distributed to licensed premises for them to display and it will also be displayed in public places across the borough.  All of the submitted entries will also be displayed at Sale Waterside for the week.

An advertising van entitled 'We're hooked on helping you' is also being put in places across the borough displaying the Trafford helpline number and the youth bus will also be travelling around the borough so that young people can seek help and advice about drug use.

Information about the effects of stimulants and what they are can be found at www.talktofrank.com or visit the Trafford cocaine website at www.trafford.knowcocaine.co.uk.
