Partners respond to residents concerns in Old Trafford

A week of action saw Safer Trafford Partnership agencies come together in Old Trafford to tackle the issues that matter most to local people.

Residents told local Police Officers during a door to door survey to 200 houses in the area, that some of their concerns were youths causing annoyance, burglary and littering.  Partnership activity was then organised to focus on these issues.

As a result of the action:

*    Two fixed penalties and a summons were issued to cyclists riding with out appropriate equipment and riding on the footpath.  The week long operation also resulted in bike serial number checking and the promotion of the immobilise (www.immobilise.com) website where people can register their property.

*    Two people were arrested on suspicion of supplying class A drugs after a quantity of drugs, believed to be heroin, and cash were seized.

*    Twelve young people were stopped by Police and Educational Welfare Officers and taken back to school.

*    The Councils Community Safety Patrol Team set up a car crime prevention centre in Stretford Mall car park to inform shoppers, many of whom are from the Old Trafford area, about how to keep their cars safe and fitted grub screws to number plates.  Shops within Stretford Mall were also visited along with the police to promote security and safety initiatives.

*    A 'Big Tidy' up saw representatives form across the partnership along with young people who are on reparation orders, work together to clean up litter in the area.

The week also included a timetabled list of activity, coordinated by the Council's Area Services Team, which saw:

*    A workshop in fashion design and one in stand-up comedy were organised by the Youth Offending Teams as part of their Positive Activities for Young People's programme, which took place all week.

*    Door to door visits were carried out by the fire service to ask people if they required a home fire risk assessment

*    Let's Go Global held a film night for local young people.

*    Increased Police, PCSO and Community Safety Patrol Officer patrols targeting areas where there were reports of anti-social behaviour

*    The Old Trafford Neighbourhood forum focussed on the activity and the meeting was used to provide local people with crime prevention advice and the opportunity to speak to local agencies.

Executive Councillor John Reilly said: "We want to reassure the local community that as a partnership we are tackling the issues that matter to them most.  This work will continue and through the feedback we receive from local people we can make a real difference to their quality of life.

“Through activities such as this and through tackling crime and ASB we can make sure Trafford remains one of the safest metropolitan boroughs in the country."

Inspector Andy Sutcliffe of the Stretford Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "We listened to concerns raised by the local community and acted upon them to try and make Old Trafford a cleaner and safer place in which to live, work and visit.

“We are confident that we can maintain this positive start and continue to prevent, detect and disrupt criminal activity, improve the local environment, offer public reassurance and further develop community pride in their surroundings."
