Make the most out of your food
Trafford is joining the rest of Greater Manchester to launch a campaign on 22 April promoting waste prevention - the first phase focuses on cutting back the amount of food thrown away.
The region is backing WRAP’s Love Food Hate Waste campaign, set up in 2007 after research found UK homes throw away 6.7m tonnes of food each year - a third of the food we buy. The cost to consumers of wasted food is £10b a year.
Executive Councillor Jonathan Coupe said: “A lot of food is wasted every year. We want local people to think about ways they can minimise this. It’s another positive way we can help make Trafford a cleaner, greener borough.”
The campaign promotes practical advice to help people make the most of the food they’re buying and waste less. Key reasons why households feel they are cutting back on waste include:
* Becoming better at planning meals so food isn’t wasted * Becoming better at using up food already in the fridge or cupboard before buying new food * Becoming better at measuring the correct portion sizes so they don’t cook too much * Becoming better at using freezers
