Inspiring Leaders

Old Trafford Community Centre was the scene of tears, laughter and inspiration at the Certificate of Learning Award ceremony for the Inspiring Leaders.

The groups of specially selected residents have spent the last eleven months learning skills to help them develop their talents and passion for community leadership and deliver community projects to enhance the lives of the people living in Old Trafford. Their vision has been to help make the area a place where 'we love to live, grow, play and prosper'. The event (held on 14 July) was to recognise their achievements so far and the evening showcased individual journeys and photographic and document evidence of the Inspiring Leaders’ community projects created from scratch.

Gathered to congratulate this group of specially selected Old Trafford residents and workers were international social entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Liao, national and international athlete Diane Modahl and the Mayor of Trafford, Councillor David Higgins who were joined by up to one hundred invited guests connected to the Inspiring Leaders.

The projects cover a variety of topics such as encouraging dietary advice and fitness for all the family, raising awareness of domestic violence in the Asian community, giving training opportunities to young people to obtain work experience in the music world and helping combat the threat of gun and knife crime via mediation skills.

International track sports star Diane Modahl said in her speech: "It’s a pleasure to be part of something so inspiring and an honour to be asked to speak at a community event in Old Trafford.”

The evening began with music from the Dohl drummers and a Steel Band. Later, dance group, international competition winners, Ice Cold, and the youth gospel choir, Soul Singers entertained the audience, in between the VIP speeches.

Bill Liao stated afterwards: “The Inspiring Leaders Programme demonstrates how thinking ‘globally’ and acting locally is the key to transforming our world, making it a better place for all. We as Leaders have to take action in our own homes, neighbourhoods and towns and the Inspiring Leaders of Old Trafford are equipped to do what it will take to make that difference to Old Trafford”.

The Inspiring Leaders Programme is devised by Potent 6 and funded by the Old Trafford Neighbourhood Management Partnership Board through Safer and Stronger Communities funding. Trafford Council and local people work together with health, police, faith and voluntary sector organisations on the Old Trafford Partnership Board..

Jo Birch, Manager of Old Trafford Neighbourhood Management said: “This whole evening has come to fruition by the brave decision of the Old Trafford Management Board to fund a fabulous group of local residents and workers on the Inspiring Leaders Programme.

“People were chosen because they showed a passionate belief that they could make a difference in Old Trafford. They stepped forward for their families, neighbours and the Old Trafford community. To witness the growth and the personal journeys of the Inspiring Leaders over the months has been an exceptional experience."
