Gritting of roads and highways

Trafford Council's gritting teams have treated roads across the borough more than 30 times since the cold weather began before Christmas and have been working 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

As weather conditions deteriorated on Tuesday, major routes across the borough had to be prioritised, including roads leading to hospitals. We are regularly reviewing our priority routes and attempting to make other routes as safe as possible, which includes town and district centres. We are in a postition to start clearing snow from these areas today, Thursday. They will also be gritted.

Some residents may see snow ploughs as well as gritters during the current severe snow as this enables the roads to be clear and passable if taken with care. Last night, Wednesday, we completed an extensive operation to mechanically plough, clear and maintain a wide area of the Trafford network. Our seven ‘gritting routes’ were all cleared and 60 tonnes of salt dropped in preparedness for the overnight frost. Unfortunately, one of the gritters itself became a victim of the overnight weather when it broke down in Altrincham last night, but other gritters were on hand to make sure all its routes were covered.

Today, we are pleased that our gritters have been deployed on additional, local roads which are key to gaining aceess through local communities and estates.

We continue to have enough salt stocks to last for the Met Office's five day forecast.

Executive Councillor Alan Mitchell said: "Our gritting teams have been working extremely hard over the past few weeks to make sure residents of Trafford can make their journeys across the borough as safely as possible.

Staff are working in very difficult conditions and we are constantly reviewing the highway priorities to make sure we retain enough grit to maintain key routes across Trafford."

Advice nationally and locally is to only make journeys which are absolutely necessary.
