Vehicles in Trafford Council’s new fleet are not only providing value for money for local taxpayers, they are also proving environmentally friendly, with carbon dioxide emissions – which are harmful to the environment – dropping massively since the rollout started.

CO2 emissions from council vehicles have dropped by around 42 per cent since the rollout of the fleet began in January 2007 – and will continue going down as more vehicles are introduced until the fleet is completely replaced in 2011.

This is because the vehicles, which include street sweepers, tipper trucks and snow ploughs, contain the latest clean and fuel-efficient diesel engines. Many are also fitted with a satellite tracking system which manages journey times more effectively, reducing fuel usage and emissions. The council is also looking at working to educate drivers on better driving techniques to save fuel.

Executive Councillor Matt Colledge said: “At Trafford Council, we encourage local people to be environmentally-friendly, and have led the way as a council by securing these ‘green’ vehicles for our own fleet. Not only is the new fleet bringing real value for money for local people, it’s helping to make our borough cleaner and greener.”

Trafford Transport Provision (TTP) is working in partnership with TransLinc to provide a fleet of new contract hire vehicles for the council as part of a seven-year contract. This is one of the successes of Trafford Council's partnership with Northgate Kendric Ash, which is delivering efficiencies across Trafford Transport Provision's business.

Trafford Transport Provision has saved the council over £5 million since the end of 2004, which has meant resources were able to be redirected across the council.
