Free childcare sessions in Trafford available

Trafford Council is urging local families with a two-year-old to find out if they are eligible for free childcare sessions.

The sessions, up to 10 hours a week, can be provided by a registered childcare provider such as pre-school playgroup, private day nursery or an accredited Trafford childminder.

Families must live in one of the following areas, with one of these identified postcodes:
Broadheath and Dunham (WA14 5**)
Broomwood and Timperley (WA15 7**)
Flixton and Woodsend (M41 6** or M41 8**)
Old Trafford and Firswood (M15 4**, M15 5**, M16 7**, M16 9** or M16 0**)
Partington and Carrington (M31)
Sale Moor (M33 2**)
Sale West (M33 4** or M33 5**)
Stretford, Lostock and Gorse Hill (M32)

They must also be in receipt of one of the following means-tested benefits:
Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Extra Working Tax Credit relating to a disability, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit (only the Child, Disabled Child or Severely Disabled Child elements).

Children will become eligible for funding in one of the following three funding periods depending on when their second birthday falls.

Birthday between         Child can claim from
1 January and 31 March        1 April
1 April and 31 August        1 September
1 September and 31 December    1 January.

Parents can choose how they claim their funded sessions, either up to 10 hours a week over 38 weeks of the year, or seven and a half hours a week over 51 weeks of the year.  However, parents choosing the second option must remember some childcare providers, such as pre-school playgroups may only be open for 38 weeks a year, so this option may not always be available.

Once a funding application has been accepted, if a family's benefit entitlement changes, it won't make any difference. The child will still be funded until they become eligible for the free early education entitlement for three and four year olds. This is available to all three and four years olds and from September 2010, the free entitlement will increase from 12.5 hours to 15 hours per week.

Anyone who thinks they may be eligible, but would like to discuss their personal circumstances, should contact Trafford's Children and Young People Information Service on 0161 912 1053, e-mail cypis@trafford.gov.uk or their local Children's Centre.
