Council leads the way on transport improvements

Trafford Council today led the way in ensuring that the people of Greater Manchester will have their say on the proposed package of transport improvements and associated congestion charge.

Council Leader Susan Williams proposed that the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) ask Electoral Reform Services to conduct a poll across all 10 councils to test whether there was public support for the proposals.

She suggested the poll take place in the autumn of 2008 with results available on a  council by council  basis. The actual question that people will be asked will be agreed by AGMA over the next few months. Only if seven councils vote in favour will AGMA continue with these transport plans. The proposals received the unanimous support of the other AGMA council leaders.

Cllr Williams said "Speaking on behalf of Trafford Council I am delighted everyone could see the importance of giving the people of Greater Manchester a voice in this vital decision. This is one of the biggest decisions we will ever have to take in Greater Manchester and it's crucial that we get it right. Making sure people can vote on this means we will have a proper democratic basis for the decision that is finally taken."

She continued "The council has always insisted that any proposals must have a clear majority in favour of them if they are to go ahead. These proposals will guarantee that nothing will happen unless it has the support of the majority."
