Community station goes 'global'

Trafford's very own community broadband TV station has been commissioned to make short films that will feature as part of the Manchester International Festival.

Lets Go Global, funded by Trafford Council, is based in Old Trafford and provides opportunities for local people to learn about broadcasting over the web as well as giving them the opportunity to use cameras and editing equipment to tell their stories.

The team has been working with the festival organisers, local groups from across Greater Manchester, North West Film Archive, Manchester Metropolitan University and Cornerhouse to create three short films and an on-line web site which accompanies Jeremy Deller’s public event Procession, which will make its way along Deansgate in central Manchester at 2pm on Sunday 5 July.

The three films produced footage about Trafford Rose Queens, communities in Bolton and Rochdale who worked in the cotton mills and the Blackout Crew, a group of young MCs from Bolton.

Executive Councillor John Reilly, said: "Let's Go Global is mainly made up of community based volunteers and this is an excellent opportunity for them to be involved in such a large project.

"I am also extremely pleased that a local community project is also being given the opportunity to be involved in the festival and now we've proved we can deliver a high quality product I hope our reputation brings in more projects like this that we can use to give local people experience."

Following the event the films will be available to viewed in their entirety through an exhibition at Cornerhouse which runs after the procession until 30 August.

People are also able to submit their own footage of processions via the website which is located at www.manchesterprocession.com
