'Excellent' website is one of top 20 in country
Trafford Council's website is one of the top 20 council websites in the country, according to an independent survey.
In its annual examination of websites, the Society of Information Technology Management praised www.trafford.gov.uk for 'excellent' content and has also said it is an example of good practice in engaging the local community.
The council launched its monthly live webchats for the public to quiz senior councillors and managers a year ago and its online discussion forum in October. Since that time, nearly 200 people have joined the forum to post messages and some have had more than 30,000 views.
Executive councillor Alex Williams said: "I am delighted that the council's website has been recognised in this survey. We have worked hard to develop the site over the past year and are continuing to update it to provide more and better access to council services for local people.
"Going online is one of the most easy, efficient ways to communicate with the council and I would encourage everyone to visit www.trafford.gov.uk and take a look round the site. If you don't have Internet access at home, you can use computers at your local library, free of charge, to get online. A new online self service area is also being launched at Sale Waterside this week to provide even more opportunity for people to do their business with us via the web."
The website provides information on all council services and allows local people and businesses to access most services, including payment of council tax and business rates and reporting issues such as pot holes, faulty street lamps or missed bin collections.
Last year, more than 1,200 people used the website to apply for secondary school admission places - that's nearly 45 per cent of all the applications the council received, with the rest arriving by post. Since 1 April 2007, more than 300 planning applications have been submitted on-line, representing around 17 per cent of the total number of applications submitted to the council.
