Spend a penny, save a pound
More than 150 water-saving devices have been handed out to Trafford Council staff as part of an energy efficiency campaign.
The Save-a-Flush packs, from United Utilities, have been distributed in council buildings including public toilets, an Altrincham school, and several community resource centres during the past two weeks.
Fitting a Save-a-flush device in the cistern saves around one litre of water every time the toilet is flushed. The device contains super absorbent polymer and silica sand, which absorbs water when it is placed in the toilet cistern.
Executive Councillor Jonathan Coupe said: “Staff at the council already carry out many simple but effective measures at work to look after our environment, from recycling paper to turning off computer monitors when they’re not in use.
“The Save-a-Flush packs are another useful way for us to be energy efficient, and I would encourage businesses and local people across Trafford to consider using them as another easy way to help us create a ‘greener’ borough.”
A toilet is flushed on average around 10 times daily which means that over the period of 12 months a staggering 547,000 litres of water will be saved from being flushed down the toilet, saving more than £1,000.
Flushing the toilet takes up one third of the total water we use every day - this is good quality clean drinking water.
All toilets fitted before the year 2000 use 7-9 litres of water when they are flushed.
Toilets fitted after 2000 tend to have a low-level flush, using only six litres of water, which is already water efficient.
The save-a-flush packs are available from United Utilities free of charge, telephone 0845 746 2200. |
