Inspiring Leaders in Old Trafford
People in Old Trafford are being given the chance to learn more about being leaders so they can develop projects in their areas that will make a difference to the communities they live in.
The Old Trafford Neighbourhood Management (OTNM) Board has commissioned an Inspiring Leaders programme which means 20 local people and workers can work together to build on their leadership skills, qualities and learning. The projects will cover areas such as education, tackling crime and encouraging community involvement. All 20 leaders will be given 6 one-to-one coaching sessions to help work on specific skills to develop their projects. The programme is designed to help them use their developing knowledge to deliver up to 20 local projects in support of the vision for the area, that Old Trafford is the place where we love to live, grow, play and prosper.
Each leader will work with five other residents on their projects, which means around 120 new people will be involved in looking at local problems and solutions for them, with everyone having the chance to contribute to the plans.
One of the 'leaders' Doretta Maynard said she wanted to get involved in something that can bring about an improvement in the area.
"There is no better opportunity to get involved in something on my doorstep that will benefit my community, my children and their friends and hopefully even my grandchildren," Doretta added.
Through this process OTNM expect every individual to discover how they can make things happen – whether it involves learning how to set up or use organisational systems; knowing where or from whom to find help; learning to trust themselves and develop greater confidence in their leadership abilities.
Samuel Burke is also part of the inspiring leaders programme, he said: "For me this is a challenge but I love Old Trafford, it is a great place to live. I have lived here over twenty years and this is giving me the chance to be able to do something for this area and the people around me."
Executive councillor Mike Cornes said: "This kind of project will give people the chance to develop skills and gain the knowledge they need to make positive changes to their communities in areas they think need improving. I am delighted that so many residents of Old Trafford have agreed to take part in the project and hope that at the end of it we have a legacy whereby others will want to become more involved. It is important we focus on developing people so that they want to invest in the areas they live and help shape its future."
The two day workshops take place every two months. The first year of the programme finishes in June 09 when many projects will still be running. |
