Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE), Northern Rail and Metrolink, have put together a free guide to activities and days out to promote the environmental benefits of using public transport.

The ‘Midsummer days June 2009’ guide highlights events that are all easily accessible by train and Metrolink trams across the county. From healthy walks, scenic bike rides and folk trains, to local carnivals, brass bands and a Victorian garden party, there’s something for all ages to enjoy.

GMPTE’s Interim Service Delivery Director, Michael Renshaw, said: “There are some health-inspiring events going on across Greater Manchester this June and public transport is a great way of getting to them. We’ve produced this guide to help make days out easier for people and I hope people will consider giving public transport a go.”

June also sees two big climate change initiatives: World Environment Day on 5 June and National Bike Week from 13–21 June, both of which will be celebrated across the county with a number of events.

“Reducing your carbon footprint while you enjoy them is a great way to also mark the two national environment campaigns,” adds Michael.

“Off-peak train and tram travel is easy and convenient. It reduces the headache of driving and having to find and pay for a parking space and it’s value for money.”

Train and tram travel throughout the county is free for children under 5 and children under 16 travel for approximately half an adult fare. There are also a range of concessionary off-peak family tickets to help families enjoy great summer days out.
