GMITA approves first steps towards Airport Metrolink line
Significant steps towards extending the Metrolink network to Manchester Airport are to take place this year.
Members of the Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) welcomed the move at a meeting of its Capital Projects Committee on Friday, releasing £26 million to fund design and preparatory work.

Councillor Richard Knowles, Chair of the Capital Projects Committee, said: “We are delighted to see that such a strong start is to be made this year on the delivery of the Metrolink line to Manchester Airport.

“This is a very important stage of the delivery, which, as well as advanced works, involves developing the designs in further detail. We will also be doing detailed work on the scope and programme for diverting utilities such as electrical cables and pipes.

“Extensive topographic, geotechnical and environmental surveys will also take place and the results used to inform the design process.”

The Airport line is largely financed by the Greater Manchester Transport Fund, a £1.5 billion investment programme covering 15 major transport schemes for Greater Manchester.
