Swine flu advice

The number of swine flu cases recorded in the UK is increasing with most cases being mild and there are simple steps you can take to help protect yourself and others.

Abdul Razzaq, director of public health at Trafford PCT says:

"The PCT and partner organisations are well prepared for this situation. The key message is that if you have flu-like symptoms you should stay at home. Don’t go to Accident & Emergency at the hospital or your GP surgery but if you are still concerned, call your GP or NHS Direct on 0845 4647 for further advice.

"To reduce the spread of infection everyone should ensure that they regularly wash their hands with soap and water, clean hard surfaces frequently and use tissues to cover their nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing. Used tissues should be placed in a bin as soon as possible. It is essential to make sure that children also follow this advice.

"You can also prepare now in case swine flu becomes widespread by establishing a network of ‘flu friends’ who may be friends and relatives who can help if you fall ill. You can also make sure that you have an adequate amount of cold and cough remedies in your medicine cupboard in case you or your family are affected."
